Diffusion welding is proving to be an innovative solution when it comes to large-area, pressure-resistant and vacuum-tight welded joints with a long service life and high durability. By means of diffusion welding monolithic components or semi-finished products can be produced which are composed of several layers or of molded part halves. Under pressure and heat influence, the individual layers are welded together on their entire surface. An additional material or interlayer is not required. This method enables complex hollow structures in the interior of the component that can not be produced by established machining technologies. With its experience and state-of-the-art technical equipment, ifw Jena has been a long-standing partner for regional as well as international companies and research institutions.

Among others, ifw Jena cooperates with micrometal GmbH in the field of diffusion welding.  The process can be employed with etched precision foils. The film thickness of less than 500 micrometers enables the production of particularly complex structures inside the component: these precise micro-components can be used i.a. in high-frequency and power electronics as well as microfluidics.

The services and research work of the ifw Jena - Günter Köhler Institute for Joining Technology and Materials Testing GmbH are concerned with diffusion welding, laser material processing, additive manufacturing and other furnace-based processes. ifw Jena also develops bonding technologies with organic and inorganic adhesives for high temperature applications, as well as innovative welding processes with arc and laser welding technologies. The research work is supported by the extensive expertise in material and compound characterization. The accredited materials testing laboratory of ifw Jena offer a variety of services in the field of destructive and non-destructive testing.
